Finally got one!

I’ve been tracking this thing for over a year now.   Not really into collecting Bearbricks, I passed when the first version was available on Kawsone.  I attempted to get the grey one but was five minutes too late and they were sold out. Not willing to pay the insane reseller prices, I kept searching online for a bargain. No go. The Black version was then released and I was ready to pull the trigger but they were never made available on Kawsone. I was pretty sure I missed out again.

For my birthday, my wife not only tracked one of these bad boys down, but she got it at a really good price. Together, my folks and her got this for me. I was so impressed. Having scavenged for many an hour online and never having any success, it was the last thing I thought they could find. Maybe its years of hearing me blabbering non stop about all this shit, but my wife’s got some mad skills for something she has no interest in. I think she can hold her own in any geek conversation. Anyways, this is my first and probably last Kaws piece; what an incredible gift. It was like I was a kid again opening my first Transformer. Thanks to my folks and my wife for this.

On a side note, I somehow have a knack for buying shit at its prime, when its most expensive, only to have it plummet in value shortly after (see my entry on the Pigeons). The good thing is I never buy any of this stuff as an “investment”, but it kills my wife to see the declining value compared to what I originally paid. Not only do I overpay, but I consciously pass on items that somehow blowup and appreciate. I remember deciding between buying a $150 Michael Lau figure and a $150 Kaws Accomplice figure back in 2002 when I was in Tokyo. What did I get? You guessed it, I picked up the Lau figure (that I can probably get for $75 now) instead of the Accomplice that goes for $500-$700 today.

I did the same thing for the James Jarvis King Ken figure when it came out. Shit was released for like $75 and is almost $500 now.

What’s this all mean? In short, I’m a shitty investor but more importantly, I’m just like everyone else; into the current trends and fads. I’m hoping to break this pattern with this new Kaws Bearbrick but if history holds, if you want one, stay tuned, the prices should be dropping any day now.
