The End

It was announced last week that the Japanese clothing brand, “A Bathing Ape” (Bape) was sold to Hong Kong based group I.T. for approximately $2.8MM.  This might sound like a lot, but for those who have followed the rise (and fall) of Bape, this was one of the most influential and pioneering streetwear brands that at its peak, was easily worth over 10X and even 100X the current selling price. Here’s an article from the Wall Street Journal documenting the sale.

Nigo (in the middle), is the known as the “General” of Bape.  This is some of my Bape figure collection.

Despite the recent decline of the brand, I was a fan.  Whenever in Japan, I would always stop buy the Bape “Busy Workshops”.  Back then, the stores (which were incredibly designed) were always hidden and difficult to find.  Here’s some of my pictures from the past five to ten years.

Bape Cafe (Food not bad and pretty reasonable – its gone now though)
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve always been a fan of Nigo and the Bape brand (especially in the early years).  Their designs were unique and loud, the exclusivity was magnetic, the architecturally designed stores were unlike any I’ve seen before and the concept of a $65 t shirt or $200 sneakers was absurd (but still a must have).  Add in an eccentric “General” with his diamond grill (teeth), insane house and crazy collections of Star Wars figures, jewelry and cars, and the whole Bape concept was an inspiration.  Below is a quick shot of my customized Nigo Oeuff I did a few years ago.  Playing off the Nigolden Eye show (MTV Japan reality show featuring Nigo) and the golden egg theme, this is the Nigolden Oeuff with diamond grill and all!
