I’m really late on this, but I’m generally really slow on new technologies. It took me until 2011 to sign up for my first smart phone (and cell phone). I’ve been looking for a mini speaker/radio system for one of the rooms in our house and had my eye on one of the Tivoli mini radios. I’m a sucker for sleek looking gadgets so their lineup of radios fit the bill. However, being the new proud owner of an iPhone, while I was scouring the net looking for cool apps and accessories, I was tempted by the Jawbone Jambox portable speaker system.
These are basically small, portable speaker bricks. What’s cool about them is that they are wireless for your iPhone, iPod, laptop, etc. They can also interact with your cell phone to create a speaker phone system. These speakers are small but given their size, they crank out some pretty decent sound. They also look pretty cool and seem to be built pretty well. If you’re thinking about getting one, they’re not cheap and retail at $199 (I was able to get it at a pretty good discount). Also, although the sound is pretty good for a portable wireless speaker of this size, its no match to a stand alone proper hifi. But if you go in with realistic expectations, its pretty cool.
I wanted the red one, but given the discount, they only had black and blue. Here’s the Jambox with the packaging.
In summary, it’s well built, provides decent sound (for a portable speaker), it looks really cool and given the size its quite powerful. However, given the price, I think it’s too expensive and not really worth it (unless you really really need something in a small package that’s portable to travel with) since its no comparison to a proper sound system. But if you have a few bucks to blow, I’d get it.
