Artist: Masashi (team BTTF) Series: Lego Cuusoo (#004) Date Purchased: August 2013 Price purchased: $45CAD Story: I played with Lego ever since I was a toddler. Although I haven’t purchased any sets for a while now, I’ve always been on the lookout for interesting sets (not to mention I have some relatives and friends who are simply mad about Lego and keep me up to date). About a year and half ago (sometime in 2011), I came across something called LEGO CUUSOO. I wasn’t sure if it was official Lego, but the concept sounded pretty cool. Here’s how it works (from…
Holy SHIT!
I was just browsing around the other day and came across this auction listing from Christie’s auction house in London. The auction was from September 2012 so it’s pretty recent. This is for a pair of prints from famed Japanese artist, Yoshitomo Nara. The set is called “Cosmic Girl (Eyes Open, Eyes Shut)” and it’s a pretty nice set. There was a limited run of 500 of these back in 2008 published by the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Several years ago, you could spot a few of these on Ebay pretty easily from $800USD – $2,000USD for the pair. That being…
Fab-rica Treat!
After swimming class, we usually race home to have a quick lunch before nap time. On rare occasions where we’re lazy to cook lunch (or don’t have left overs at home), we may stop by a quick bite at a restaurant on the way home. These quick stops are not that good, glorified fast food joints. Several weekends ago, we had a bit more time and out of the blue, my wife asked me to where I would like to go for lunch as a treat. We’re always go go go so this was a real surprise. Anyways, I always…
Lego Master
Haven’t posted for a long long while. Things have been pretty hectic on the home front but are finally back to normal. I should have more regular updates going forward. Here’s a quick post. I’ve always been a huge fan of Lego. Ever since I was probably five years old, I always had a bucket of Lego in front of me. Saturday mornings, while my folks were sleeping, I would get up, grab my lego and play for hours. I was never a fan of the standard sets and would rather use the pieces to build my own creations (airplanes,…
Weekend Brunch in TO
Ever since we got our dog Brooster over three years ago, we rarely have the opportunity to go out to eat. Frankly, its my own hang up of not wanting to leave him at home on weeknights or weekend since the poor guys on his own during the work week. It doesn’t help that he’s fully aware of my conscience and milks it. That bugger somehow knows it’s a weekend or weeknight and he’ll start wimpering and crying the minute we show signs of leaving him alone. The crazy thing is that he also knows when it’s a weekday and…
My Perfect Day…
Haven’t posted in a while as we’ve been very busy, frantically getting ready to move. I never realized the amount of crap I’ve accumulated over the years (I’ll share more of that in another blog). This experience has me seriously reconsidering buying more junk in the future. Okay, this post has nothing to do with the move, just something I look back on with fond memories (pre-moving days) hoping they’ll be back soon. I’m a regular reader of Giant Robot magazine and in each issue, there’s a section called “My Perfect Day” that I always enjoy reading. For me, my perfect day,…
Great lunch at the folks’
We were lucky to have lunch at my folks’ house. My mom is a fantastic cook and every time we stop by, she tries a new recipe or whips up something extraordinary. Today we were treated by these two home baked savory pastries. One was baked with asparagus, button mushrooms, tarragon and a bechamel sauce (this was the one that was open) and the other was with a curried ground beef and sauteed onion filling. This is what they looked like fresh out of the oven: And on the plate! They were so good.
BDay Dinner!
This is late, but a while ago for my birthday, my folks came over and my mom cooked up one of my favorite meals. I’m usually a homebody and don’t like leaving the Beast alone, so a home cooked meal with family is the perfect gift for me. Here’s what she fired up. Jumbo shrimps (my favourite)! Here’s the plate of shrimps, fresh pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and mixed mushrooms and cauliflower. Recently, I’ve been looking for a backpack and my wife picked up on this and the family got me this set of bags from Herschel Supply Co. Good quality, simply designed bags…
Fashion Fan?
When I was growing up in Toronto, the weekend 6:30pm time slot was reserved for family TV time. Specifically CityTV’s Fashion Television (FT). I think it began with my mom wanting to followup on the latest trends and fashion designers. For my Dad and I, it was a chance to check out the models and get the rare glimpse of booby on the runway. I can’t remember when this ritual started, but I’ve been watching FT since primary school (although the network and time slot have changed). I’m not too fussy about what I wear myself, but since watching FT,…
He’s Back!
First game back since the All Star break and I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief. The horrorshow of the Knicks vs. Heat game looks to be a one time, temporary blip (fingers crossed). Linsanity is back in full effect!!! Knicks won 120 to 103 vs. the Cavs with Lin having a “doubo, doubo” shooting 6 for 12, scoring 19 points with 13 assists. He distributed the ball well providing Melo (22 points) and Amare (12 points) with a good number of shots. The stat that stood out for me was the 1 TURNOVER he had! Excellent…
Linsantiy!!!
Jeremy MF Lin…my life has been in complete chaos for the past two weeks. I’ve sold out my beloved Raptors, I’m constantly glued to box scores, I’m spending every waking hour watching Youtube clips and reading every Lin article I can find and after every mind blowing Lin performance, my friends and I are calling each other like teenage girls and worst of all, I haven’t been able to get any sleep after every Knicks game (just too much excitement). By now, I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of Jeremy Lin and his incredible story over the past week and…
Lullaby
My good friend DJ Filthy Rich passed me some very interesting CD’s a while ago. I didn’t know these existed and may be old news to veteran parents, but I thought they were pretty awesome. These are from the “Rockabye Baby” series of CD’s which are basically lullaby renditions of popular music. The ones he picked up for me were the Bob Marley, U2 and Kanye ones. The artwork is also very cool as it pulls inspiration from the original artist. They music itself is a bit monotonous, but you can clearly identify the tunes and it’s probably meant to be…
Chinese Feast
In Toronto, it’s not hard to find fantastic, authentic Chinese food. You can find high end expensive places, hole in the wall treasures, Hong Kong style restaurants, strip mall takeout spots, westernized joints and the typical health code violation, ridiculously cheap, 24 hour spots. Historically, Toronto’s China town was in the downtown core, but in the past decade or so, it’s migrated North to the suburbs. A little while ago, four of us headed up to Richmond Hill to very reasonable, but great quality seafood restaurant my mom found. Not having eaten this stuff for a while, it was awesome….
Celestin
We were treated to some baby-sitting from my folks the other day and took the opportunity to go out for a nice lunch. We headed out to a Toronto restaurant, Celestin, we used to frequent a while ago but haven’t been to for a while. They started a new prix fix lunch menu at about $18.95 where you get to chose an appetizer, main and dessert. The food looked fantastic and tasted pretty good. You can get better meals elsewhere (I give the food here a 6-7 out of 10) but if you factor the price, the menu, and excellent…
Grass
Years ago, I was put onto a site called You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice. It’s basically a blog where people post “blatant rip offs” of others artwork. Recently, I’ve been in baby mode, buying all kinds of stuff I never knew existed and came across a rip off moment of my own at home. One item we purchased was this Skip Hop counter drying rack for baby bottles which retails for about $25. It’s pretty useful and looks nice. After purchasing it, I realized it was very similar to something I purchased about 5-6 years ago. We’ve always collected various…
Sunday Brunch
It’s always nice to go back to visit my parents at the house I grew up in. We try and go back once or twice a month and when we do, my mother usually cooks up a feast. She’s a fantastic cook and really spoils us rotten. This time we spent the night and had a good old family brunch the next morning. It’s not always this elaborate, but it’s always top notch (when your mom makes it, even the simplest of meals taste special). Here’s the spread: Piping hot homemade scones, homemade tomato jam and fresh cream (not shown…
Work in Progress
I’m working on a new Oeuff figure now. It’s inspired by a few different things in my life right now but it’s predominately based on the work of an artist I’ve been into lately. I’ll show more pics as this figure progresses. Can you guess what it’s based on? Here’s a clue (it’s not Kaws).
Unintentionally…
Ever since I bought my first record, I was a fan of Hip Hop music. Hip Hop artists have a lot of traits, but many like to (or can) be characterized as chauvinistic, proud, masculine, and pretty tough knuckle-heads. Very rarely would a hip hop artist openly support being gay. That’s why when my friend Filthy Rich sent this link of “14 More of the Most Unintentionally Gay Rap Lyrics Ever”, I thought it was hilarious. Check out this list in full but here are some of the highlights. I really like how the article breaks up each lyric into “What he’s probably saying” and “What…
Toy Blogs
After I finally decided to share my project Boutiqueoeuff, I found that although it can be challenging getting exposure, there’s a very supportive vinyl toy community out there. Here are some very informative blogs to check out for your daily vinyl toy fix. These guys were also kind enough to drop a post about Boutiqueoeuff. Spanky Stokes Toysrevil Clutter Magazine Plastic and Plush I also found a few artist community sites, linking artists and their work to each other and collectors. I found Boutiqueoeuff on some of these sites and I also uploaded my portfolio onto a few myself….
Star Wars Collector
After first coming across the book, “Star Wars, 1,000 Collectables, Memorabilia and Stories from a Galaxy Far, Far Away” at a local bookshop a while ago, I’ve kept my eye on it ever since. It was a bit pricey so I would just glance through the pages everytime I was in the neighbourhood. A few weeks ago, I was at a store that sells used and discounted books (BMV), and saw a stack of these for $14.99! I picked one up right away and went through it in more detail. It’s an absolute MUST for any Star Wars fan or collector. It’s basically a…
