Story: I first came across Masakatsu Sashie’s “orb” paintings through a Giant Robot gallery show and magazine article. This had to be around 6-8 years ago. He had his large “orb” paintings on exhibition at Giant Robot that I was immediately drawn to. I loved the detail, colour and “cleaness” of the pieces. They were playful yet dark at the same time. I inquired about pricing and I don’t recall the exact number, but I think they were in the $4,000-$6,000 range. These were huge paintings, probably at least 4-5ft wide. I didn’t have that amount of money to spend at the time and it would be hard to pull the trigger not being able to see the pieces in person so I passed. Looking back, those prices were steels and I gradually watched his subsequent paintings go for 3x+ that – definitely out of my range now. Early on, I couldn’t find any Sashie limited prints (except for some black and white ones I didn’t love) so when I saw these drop in 2015, I immediately bought one. It’s my way of having a small piece of a missed opportunity that I’ve tracked for almost a decade. This one was purchased from Dynamo Editions in Jersey and I think they are still available. At the same time, I also saw this print, Koto, (also edition of 50) available at Merry Karnowsky Gallery out in LA. Both are great examples of his pieces and are beautiful.
We decided to go bold with an orange frame.
